How To Publish An Enlightened Bestseller

The seeds of this dream were planted decades ago, when I was a little girl who dreamed of being a ?famous author? someday. All these years later, my big?dream to write and publish an ?enlightened bestseller? feels like maybe it is finally on the verge of coming true!

Sometimes an opportunity jumps out at you and you just know you have to leap.

Last week was one of those times for me. I received an email inviting me to participate in an Enlightened Bestseller Mastermind group in which I?d spend three days with three best-selling authors and an Internet marketing guru.

All four of them travel the world as well for motivational speaking engagements, and various other fun adventures (my kind of lifestyle!).

The goal of the ?Enlightened Bestseller? program is to help me get my book published, and also to help me catapult my public speaking career to the next level.

These are the two big career goals of the moment. Really, how much more perfect could an opportunity be?!?

hanging out at the mansion

Back to Cali!

I get to fly out to Northern California, probably my favorite region in the U.S. I?ll be staying in a sprawling, beautiful hilltop home owned by bestselling author and speaker Marci Shimoff.

I can think of few better places to spend a weekend in early December than on a hillside with views of the Pacific Ocean, at a mansion with lush gardens and a pool, in the company of people i have long admired who are doing exactly what I want to be doing in the world.

Really, just how lucky can one girl get?

Now, of course, I did have to apply for this opportunity. As was the case when I spotted the ad seeking a ?fun, fearless female writer? for 8womendream three years ago, the moment I saw this email, I knew that I needed to apply. Immediately!

I stopped what I was doing and spent the next few hours writing and polishing my application. Then I took a deep breath and hit ?Send?!

Within 48 hours I?d been contacted by Geoff Affleck, one of the facilitators, to schedule a phone interview. And then, less than one week ago, I found out that I was IN!

Such a great honor, especially considering that more than 300 people from around the world have applied?which puts me in the top 5% of applicants. Honestly, this makes getting into this program more competitive than getting into Princeton or Harvard (and I managed to pull off both of those, so I guess I?m used to beating the odds!).

I?m thrilled beyond belief? And ready to make the most of this extraordinary opportunity.

Wil I Be The Next Success Story?

Three days with New York Times bestselling authors and inspirational speakers?Janet Bray Attwood and Chris Attwood (The Passion Test); New York Times bestselling author and speaker Marci Shimoff (Happy for No Reason and Love for No Reaso?Ln), and Passion Test facilitator, Internet marketing guru and motivational speaker Geoff Affleck? what could be better?!?

Mastermind Facilitators for Enlightented Bestseller

I have followed Janet, Chris and Marci for years, and now get to meet the dynamic Geoff as well. Janet and Chris? business program, Alliance Secrets, helped launch the wildly successful, international career of Rhonda Byrne, creator and executive producer of The Secret.

They helped bestselling author T. Harv Eker bring thousands of students into his organization. Basically, they are powerhouses, and they are passionate about transformation. In fact, the mission of The Passion Test is described as: ?inspiring transformation through love.?

I love that! Bring it on!

The Benefits of the Englightened Bestseller Weekend!

Who doesn?t want to hang around with some of their heroes and inspirations for a few days? Honestly, this in and of itself would be sufficient reason to fly to NoCal for this weekend?

We?ll also get coached on how to get our books out there into the world; get tips on catapulting our transformational public speaking careers to the next level; and perhaps even more importantly, get access to their rolodexes!

Our mentors will literally make calls to introduce us to agents, publishers, other writers and speakers, or whoever we need to connect with in order to make our dreams true?

HOW COOL IS THAT?!?

It?s a dream come true for me, and I feel confident that it will help me achieve other big dreams: finally getting my book out there in the world, and doing more public speaking on a global level? I?m so excited to start living my soul?s purpose, and my passions, at a much higher level, getting a message of love out there in the world!

If anyone else is interested in joining me there, I believe there may still be a few spaces left? So apply ASAP and maybe I?ll see you there!

The Passion Test

As Janet Bray Attwood says on The Passion Test Website, ?The Passion Test is a simple yet profoundly powerful for discovering the five things you care about most?? and then building your life around those passions!

I first took The Passion Test years ago, and have since built my life around the passions I identified ?back then, which included writing, dancing, traveling, teaching and adventure? I?ll be retaking The Passion Test before heading to Cali, and we?ll see what my top passions are now, so that I can be sure I?m in action on living them all?

After all, if we just have this one life, at least in this particular incarnation, we?d better make the most of it! And enjoy the ride?

Preparing For The Weekend of a Lifetime

A few weeks ago, I declared to the Universe that I was ready to make some quantum leaps in my life. To symbolize this, I jumped out of an airplane, and cut off my nearly-waist-length hair.

The Universe apparently took my declaration seriously, dropping this opportunity into my lap so that I can end 2012 with a bang.

It?s a year that has been heralded as being a time of great transformation globally, and I?m just thrilled to get to play whatever part I can play in elevating the love consciousness of humanity, globally. I?m all about transformation, baby!

At this point, I have exactly 30 days to prepare for the weekend of a lifetime.

How does one do this, exactly?!?

Moving Forward On All Fronts!

For me, it means staying uber-focused for this next month, and working on all of the following:

  • Finally finishing my book proposal so that I am ready to roll when connecting with agents~!
  • Further polishing the third draft of my book, Burning Down the House
  • Clarifying exactly what my message is, as a speaker, and why I am the person best qualified to deliver that particular message
  • Further clarifying who my ideal clients are, as a life coach, and why I am the best person to serve them
  • Working out like crazy and eating extra-healthy just because one wants to look one?s best when hanging out in a NoCal mansion with one?s heroes and mentors!

Making Your Next Quantum Leap!

If you haven?t done so, dear dreamer, maybe now is the time for you to declare to the universe that you are ready to make a quantum leap!

There is something magical about putting that out there. In my case, the universe responded with velocity?

Maybe it is time for you to take The Passion Test too if you haven?t already, to be sure that you are living your passions?

I?ll be sharing the journey on 8womendream as always, as I head to NoCal for this phenomenal weekend? Keep dreaming big, and keep us posted on any quantum leaps towards achieving your big dreams!

Lisa is a freelance writer, consultant and life coach. She has her BA in English and Creative Writing from Princeton and her MPA from Harvard. Lisa recently finished the first draft of her book manuscript, Burning Down the House. Her dream is to publish this first book and teach the world how to successfully go after their dreams. She is also a lindy hopper, belly dancer and globe-trotter. Her post day is Tuesday. +Lisa Powell Graham lisa.powell.graham@gmail.com Lisa Powell Graham

Robot Hall of Fame inducts Big Dog, PackBot, Nao and WALL-E (video)

Image

It's the sort of ceremony that's so magical it can only occur on even-numbered years. Inventors, educators, entertainers, college students and media folk gathered at the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh, PA tonight for the 2012 inductions to the Robot Hall of Fame, a Carnegie Mellon-sponsored event created to celebrate the best of our mechanical betters.

This year, the field included four categories, judged by both a jury of 107 writers, designs, entrepreneurs and academics and the public at large, each faction constituting half the voting total. The show kicked off, however, with the induction of 2010 winners, the Spirit and Opportunity Mars rovers, the da Vinci Surgical System, iRobot's Roomba, the Terminator and Huey, Dewey and Louie, a trio of robots from 1971's Silent Running.

The first 'bot to secure its spot in the class of 2012, was the programmable humaoid Nao, from Aldebaran Robotics, which beat out the iRobot Create and Vex Robotics Design System in the Educational category. The PackBot military robot from iRobot took the Industrial and Service category, beating out the Kiva Mobile Robotic Fulfillment System and Woods Hole Oceanographic's Jason. Boston Dynamic's Big Dog ran over some stiff competition in the form of Willow Garage's PR2 and NASA's Robonaut to win the Research title. And WALL-E triumphed over doppelganger Johnny Five and the Jetsons' Rosie in the Entertainment category. Relive the festivities in four minutes after the break.

Nintendo reports continued first-half losses for 2012, is waiting on the Wii U

Nintendo's reported its financial results for the first of half of the year, and things are still a little rocky. Net sales in the last six months have decreased 6.8 percent compared to the same point last year, while net income continues to drop, this time by 27,996 million yen. As of September 2012, Nintendo has now sold over 22 million 3DS units (three million more since last quarter), while the Wii remains just shy of the 100 million milestone, settling at 97.2 million units sold. Nintendo looks to be in a similar position to last year, with customers still waiting for the company's next big console to appear -- and the gamesmaker hoping they will. Laying blame at the strong yen, the company has dramatically cut its forecast for the rest of the year, down from 20 billion ($250 million) to 6 billion yen ($75 million), pinning its hopes on 3DS sales ahead of the Wii U's global launch later this year.

Wis. authorities release photo of shooting suspect

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (AP) ? Deputies searched Sunday for a man suspected of wounding multiple people in a shooting at a spa near a suburban Milwaukee shopping mall.

Police released a photograph of the man they identified as Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, of Brown Deer. They said he was still at-large and the public's help was needed in tracking him down.

Brookfield police told WTMJ-AM the shooting happened about 11 a.m. Sunday at a spa across the street from the Brookfield Square Mall. The mall and a country club adjacent to the spa were locked down, local media reported.

Brookfield Police Lt. John Beth said a bomb squad from the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Department was at the spa. He wouldn't say why the unit was there but said it was not routine to have it respond to a shooting.

Spokesmen for the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said their agencies also had agents participating in the investigation.

Milwaukee FBI spokesman Leonard Peace said his agency sent a SWAT team and hostage negotiators, among others.

Online court records showed a temporary restraining order was issued against Haughton in Milwaukee County Circuit Court on Oct. 8 because of a domestic abuse complaint.

Beth Strohbusch, a spokeswoman for Froedtert Memorial Hospital, said four shooting victims were taken there, and three more were expected. She said none of the four already received were in critical condition.

The shooting took place at Azana Day Spa, a two-story, 9,000-square-foot building across from the mall in a middle- to upper-class community west of Milwaukee.

It was the second mass shooting in Wisconsin this year. Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran and white supremacist, killed six people and injured three others before fatally shooting himself Aug. 5 at a Sikh temple south of Milwaukee.

The shooting at the mall took place less than a mile from where seven people were killed and four wounded on March 12, 2005, when a gunman opened fire at a Living Church of God service held at a hotel.

McCracken County Humane Society Whistleblower fired

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky.--His cell phone video captured the disturbing pictures of animals being euthanized without sedation, left to die in pools of their own blood, their corpses stacked on top of each other.
That video shocked the community and led to the arrest of a coworker on nine counts of animal cruelty.? A lot of people called Jeremiah Robertson a hero for what he did to expose what was happening at the McCracken County Humane Society, but fast forward to today and Jeremiah Robertson is looking for a new job.
The organization's president says Robertson was a troublemaker who couldn't get along with his boss. Robertson thinks the society has been looking for a reason to fire him ever since he blew the whistle last year, and that reason centers around one dog that wasn't an ideal candidate for adoption, but Robertson and the previous owners say that dog shouldn't have been killed.

Austin Fairfield and Will Kingston love their dogs. They also loved the dogs' brother Gunther, but couldn't take care of all them, and reluctantly took them to the McCracken County Humane Society under the condition that they wouldn't be put down.

"We were very very adamant we told them call us if anything comes up, we'll be there," Fairfield said.

But Gunther was euthanized, Will and Austin didn't get a call until after the fact, and that call was from whistleblower Jeremiah Robertson's fiance after he told her about the dog being euthanized against the previous owners' wishes, and without their knowledge.
He said he was fired on Friday for violating policy and leaking confidential information.

"Its a humane society it's not like C.I.A. or something confidential its a humane society, it should be an open book," Robertson said.

McCracken County Humane Society president James Schumaker said Robertson was insubordinate, constantly arguing with his bosses and not a loyal employee.

"You don't get on the, on the, on your telephone and call the media every time that something happens, you just don't do it," Schumaker said.

Schumaker said Robertson's termination had nothing to with last year's whistle blowing and Robertson violated a part of the employee handbook dealing with loyalty and confidentiality.

Local 6 asked for a copy of that handbook. The president said he didn't have one and said there might be one inside the humane society, we asked for that one he said he couldn't get it because it's currently being revised.

Robertson said he's never seen an employee handbook and is sad he won't get to return to work at the McCracken County Humane Society.? Will and Austin's dogs won't go back either because they got them back and aren't letting them go.

The McCracken County Humane Society President said Jeremiah Robertson was insubordinate and a bad employee, meanwhile Robertson said he's been harassed and retaliated against ever since he blew the whistle last year, saying he can't even use the bathroom without being followed and questioned.

Both the president and Robertson said this is only the fourth animal to be put down since new leaders took control of the facility at the end of last year.

The business risk of using social media and cloud computing ...

The Cool Hunter is a site whose mission is to ?select and celebrate what is beautiful and enduring from all that is sought-after in architecture, design, gadgets, lifestyle, urban living, fashion, travel and pop culture.?

In posting cool stuff they find on the web, Cool Hunter always runs the risk of copyright infringement complaints as people have the unfortunate habit of slapping images up onto the Internet without permission from the rights holders.

Last August Cool Hunter?s founder Bill Tikos found the site?s Facebook account had been wiped for ?repeat copyright infringements? without warning or recourse.

Anybody following this site won?t be surprised to read this ? an exposed nipple can get you thrown off Facebook faster than you can say ?New Yorker cartoon? or ?it?s only a porcelain doll, for chrissake!? ? so one can only imagine the paroxysms of rage that alleged copyright infringement sends Facebook?s puritan bureaucrats into.

It?s not just nipples at Facebook though, thousands of small traders have seen their accounts arbitrarily suspended on sites like eBay and PayPal.

Google too are quick to suspend businesses from their local and search services without warning or recourse. Usually business owners only notice they?ve been locked out when they log into their control panels only to find a terse message that their account has been suspended.

What usually follows is a Kafkaesque tale of trying to understand exactly what they?ve done wrong and how to get their accounts reinstated. In some cases the businesses get cryptic messages saying their accounts are still in breach while others get no response at all. In a few examples, the offending page goes back online only to be shut down again a few days later.

Rarely does someone in this situation find a calm, helpful voice to explain exactly what they have done wrong and how to fix it.

This hostile attitude is a result of the ?hands off customer service? model of web 2.0 companies and it?s their biggest achilles heel as, paradoxically, customers and users take to social media to complain about bizarre and arbitrary account suspensions.

For some, like Cool Hunter, it?s a monumental pain and loss of a valuable platform while many of those small eBay and PayPal traders may have thousands of dollars tied up in suspended accounts they can?t access.

Unfortunately this uncertainty is the cost of doing business on social media sites and it?s one of the reasons why owning your own business website is essential.

When you choose to use one of these service, understand you?re playing in the big fat kid?s sandpit and you risk him throwing a tantrum and chucking your toys out of the playpen.

Simply put, don?t base your business on Facebook, don?t keep all your money in PayPal and always have a plan B.

Skydiver breaks sound barrier in record jump

ROSWELL, N.M. (AP) ? In a giant leap from more than 24 miles up, a daredevil skydiver shattered the sound barrier Sunday while making the highest jump ever ? a tumbling, death-defying plunge from a balloon to a safe landing in the New Mexico desert.

Felix Baumgartner hit Mach 1.24, or 833.9 mph, according to preliminary data, and became the first person to reach supersonic speed without traveling in a jet or a spacecraft after hopping out of a capsule that had reached an altitude of 128,100 feet above the Earth.

Landing on his feet in the desert, the man known as "Fearless Felix" lifted his arms in victory to the cheers of jubilant friends and spectators who closely followed his descent in a live television feed at the command center

"When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data," he said after the jump. "The only thing you want is to come back alive."

A worldwide audience watched live on the Internet via cameras mounted on his capsule as Baumgartner, wearing a pressurized suit, stood in the doorway of his pod, gave a thumbs-up and leapt into the stratosphere.

"Sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are," an exuberant Baumgartner told reporters outside mission control after the jump.

Baumgartner's descent lasted just over nine minutes, about half of it in a free fall of 119,846 feet, according to Brian Utley, a jump observer from the FAI, an international group that works to determine and maintain the integrity of aviation records. He said the speed calculations were preliminary figures.

During the first part of Baumgartner's free fall, anxious onlookers at the command center held their breath as he appeared to spin uncontrollably.

"When I was spinning first 10, 20 seconds, I never thought I was going to lose my life but I was disappointed because I'm going to lose my record. I put seven years of my life into this," he said.

He added: "In that situation, when you spin around, it's like hell and you don't know if you can get out of that spin or not. Of course it was terrifying. I was fighting all the way down because I knew that there must be a moment where I can handle it."

Baumgartner said traveling faster than sound is "hard to describe because you don't feel it." The pressurized suit prevented him from feeling the rushing air or even the loud noise he made when breaking the sound barrier.

With no reference points, "you don't know how fast you travel," he said.

The 43-year-old former Austrian paratrooper with more than 2,500 jumps behind him had taken off early Sunday in a capsule carried by a 55-story ultra-thin helium balloon.

His ascent was tense at times and included concerns about how well his facial shield was working.

Any contact with the capsule on his exit could have torn his suit, a rip that could expose him to a lack of oxygen and temperatures as low as minus-70 degrees. That could have caused lethal bubbles to form in his bodily fluids.

But none of that happened. He activated his parachute as he neared Earth, gently gliding into the desert about 40 miles east of Roswell and landing smoothly. The images triggered another loud cheer from onlookers at mission control, among them his mother, Eva Baumgartner, who was overcome with emotion, crying.

He then was taken by helicopter to meet fellow members of his team, whom he hugged in celebration.

Coincidentally, Baumgartner's accomplishment came on the 65th anniversary of the day that U.S. test pilot Chuck Yeager became the first person to officially break the sound barrier in a jet. Yeager, in fact, commemorated that feat on Sunday, flying in the back seat of an F-15 Eagle as it broke the sound barrier at more than 30,000 feet above California's Mojave Desert.

At Baumgartner's insistence, some 30 cameras recorded his stunt. Shortly after launch, screens at mission control showed the capsule, dangling from the massive balloon, as it rose gracefully above the New Mexico desert, with cheers erupting from organizers. Baumgartner could be seen on video, calmly checking instruments inside.

The dive was, in fact, more than just a stunt. NASA is eager to improve its blueprints for future spacesuits.

Baumgartner's team included Joe Kittinger, who first tried to break the sound barrier from 19.5 miles up in 1960, reaching speeds of 614 mph. With Kittinger inside mission control, the two men could be heard going over technical details during the ascension.

"Our guardian angel will take care of you," Kittinger radioed to Baumgartner around the 100,000-foot mark.

An hour into the flight, Baumgartner had ascended more than 63,000 feet and had gone through a trial run of the jump sequence. Ballast was dropped to speed up the ascent.

Kittinger told him, "Everything is in the green. Doing great."

As Baumgartner ascended, so did the number of viewers watching on YouTube; company officials said the event broke a site record with more than 8 million simultaneous live streams at its peak.

After Baumgartner landed, his sponsor, Red Bull, posted a picture of him on his knees on the ground to Facebook, generating nearly 216,000 likes, 10,000 comments and more than 29,000 shares in less than 40 minutes.

On Twitter, half the worldwide trending topics had something to do with the jump, pushing past seven NFL football games. Among them was this tweet from NASA: "Congratulations to Felix Baumgartner and RedBull Stratos on record-breaking leap from the edge of space!"

This attempt marked the end of a long road for Baumgartner, a record-setting high-altitude jumper. He already made two preparation jumps in the area, one from 15 miles high and another from 18 miles high. He has said that this was his final jump.

Red Bull has never said how much the long-running, complex project cost.

Although he broke the sound barrier, the highest manned-balloon flight record and became the man to jump from the highest altitude, he failed to break Kittinger's 5 minute and 35 second longest free fall record. Baumgartner's was timed at 4 minutes and 20 seconds in free fall.

He said he opened his parachute at 5,000 feet because that was the plan.

"I was putting everything out there, and hope for the best and if we left one record for Joe ? hey, it's fine," he said when asked if he intentionally left the record for Kittinger to hold. "We needed Joe Kittinger to help us break his own record and that tells the story of how difficult it was and how smart they were in the 60's. He is 84 years old, and he is still so bright and intelligent and enthusiastic."

Baumgartner has said he plans to settle down with his girlfriend and fly helicopters on mountain rescue and firefighting missions in the U.S. and Austria.

Before that, though, he said, "I'll go back to LA to chill out for a few days ... will take it easy as hell, trust me."

Obama trumpets rebound of US auto industry - Washington Examiner

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama is hailing the rebound of the U.S. auto industry, pointing to progress since his administration rescued General Motors and Chrysler.

Obama says in his weekly radio and Internet address that auto sales are the highest they've been in more than four years and the industry has created nearly a quarter of a million new jobs.

Obama frequently cites GM and Chrysler as a success story for his campaign. Automakers are large employers in Ohio, one of the key battleground states being contested by Obama and Republican Mitt Romney.

Markwayne Mullin, an Oklahoma Republican running for Congress, says in the GOP address that the Obama administration has pushed regulations that make it difficult for businesses.

He says the economy "doesn't need more meddling ? it needs more certainty."

In 2001, a family in Texas won $32.1 million (later reduced to an amount kept confidential) in a case involving extensive mold damage to their home. Even Erin Brockovich, Michael Jordan, Bianca Jagger and Ed McMahon have experienced mold contamination in their houses. The governor of North Carolina had to move out of the mold-infested Governor?s Mansion in August 2005. Mold is a health risk for children, adults, and even pets. Learn how to avoid mold, how to eliminate mold once it is discovered, and the health effects of mold, in these articles, book, Web sites, and Web videos.

Get Familiar With Detox from Alcohol | Article Directory

Alcohol rehab is the solely identified effective treatment to fight the drinking dilemma. Prevention of backslide is best obtained with the assistance of the proper alcohol treatment program. There are a lot of alcohol centers that offer numerous approaches on alcohol supervision and the choices develop each year.

Detox for alcohol is indispensible because it?s the sole method that can address cravings for the substance. Through detox, the body alleviates alcohol and also history of it in a continuous approach. The intake of alcoholic is decreased little by little in order to avoid the appearance of withdrawal signs and symptoms. The process can be performed both in the out-patient and in-patient therapy settings. The period of treatment would even be dependent on the client?s situation.

Generally, detox arises from 3 days to a week. For severe alcohol dependency, it can be as short as 3 days and customers may then endure out-patient care. These scenarios are controllable and they may be told to go home as long as the whole family is accommodating and participative in the treatment plan. On the other hand, severe alcoholism would require a longer period of time to be detoxified. It is based on the alcoholic?s reaction on the procedure. Detox can be came to the conclusion when the customer will no longer experiences desires to alcohol.

Detoxification is then followed by counseling as well as therapies as adjunct procedures. Detox is performed ahead of the start of the routines to let the customer focus well on his objectives towards recovery. When he still craves for the alcoholic beverages, full concentration couldn?t be guaranteed while he is experiencing counseling sessions and therapy.

There are detoxification processes that would not call for medications to be provided to the client. Several solutions believe that the body has its natural ways of excreting the harmful toxins. This would work best for alcoholics in the early levels of alcohol dependency. Alcohol dependency is not as strong as the one experience in long-term or severe addiction to alcohol. There are methods too that would need the utilization of other medicines to control the problem. Anxiolytics are provided to reduce the stress of the client during processes. Antabuse is the resident treatment given to alcoholics which will produce worsened signs when the alcoholic ingests alcohol whilst under treatment.

Detox for alcohol should not be taken for granted, even if the dilemma is very light. It is always best to seek the advice of the medical authorities regarding alcohol treatment. Greater danger awaits if an addict attempts to resolve the condition on his own.

Are you a Midnight Writer? | Behind the Counter

Do you procrastinate by writing poetry? ?Do you write analytical essays with the flair of a novella? ?Dickens, Faulkner, Kerouac, and Twain are alright, but are you convinced that you?re the next big name in literature? ?(All four of them dropped out of school by the way. ?Just a thought.)

In short, are you a Midnight Writer? ?Prove it.

Midnight MUG is giving away scholarships to six Georgetown undergraduate students for submitting creative writing of any form. ?You may have some questions, like?

1. How do I submit?

There are two ways to submit to the scholarship.

To win $500 or $1000! Email a word document with your formal submission to marketing.midnight@thecorp.org.

To win $250!?Hand-write a 6-word story while in line at Midnight MUG, write your netID on the paper, and hand it to the cashier. ?We?ll take care of it from there!

2. When is the deadline?

OCTOBER 19, so get on it.

3. How many winners are there?

1 person will win $1000 for special recognition of creativity and effort in their formal submission, and 3 more people will win $500 for outstanding formal submissions. ?2 people will win $250 dollars for their six-word stories.

4. Are there any limitations as to length, structure, format, etc.?

NO. ?None. ?Seriously, none. ?If you think it?s worth reading and you put some creative thought behind it, send it our way. ?We think that having no limitations on submissions is the best way to foster creativity. ?Fun fact ? a few submissions last year were songs! ?With mp3s attached! ?That was awesome!

5. What should I write about?

Don?t ask me, I get inspired by weird things. ?You do you.

6. Can I submit something I wrote for a class?

Go right ahead!

7. How many pieces can I submit?

There is no set limit on how many pieces you can submit. ?That said, if you have a folder on your computer just filled to the brim with creative genius, I would recommend that you pick your favorite three or four. ?The readers on the judging committee (which we?ll get to in a second) won?t know who wrote the pieces they?re reading, but they will know which pieces are written by the same author, and your submissions of 58 pieces may not be very appreciated at that time.

8. What is this ?judging committee? of which you speak? ?How do you pick winners?

As submissions come in, the Midnight Marketing department (oh hey that?s me!) name-blinds the submissions. ?Once all of the submissions have been collected and name-blinded, a committee of readers will come together to read all of the submissions, both the formal and 6-word ones. ?Each piece will be read by at least three reading committee members, and after reading a piece, the committee member will rank it on a scale from 1 (ehhhhh) to 3 (I?ve died and gone to literary heaven). ?Once all pieces have been read three times, the scores will be tallied and the top submissions will be discussed. ?The committee will then send their top ten formal submissions and top five 6-word submissions to The Corp?s Board of Directors, with recommendations as to who should win the scholarships. ?The board will send their final decision to the Midnight Marketing department, and we take it from there. ?Yahoo!

9. Who?s on the reading committee?

Members of the Midnight MUG upper management and members of CPC (Corp Philanthropy Committee). ?While Midnight?s upper management is, as you may imagine, all Corp employees, CPC is comprised of both Corpies and non-Corpies alike, so the judging is sure to be fair.

10. What happens if I win? ?Excuse me ? when?I win?

A few very fun things.

1. You get a check from CPC!

2. A post will go up on Behind the Counter with your piece and a little information about you!

3. You will be invited to participate in a live reading in Midnight MUG!

4. Your work will be published in The Anthem, Georgetown?s literary magazine!

!!!!

11. Why are you doing this?

The Midnight Writer Scholarship was introduced in Fall 2011 as a way for Midnight to give back to the students that visit us every day. ?It was conceptualized and developed by Alex Mark, Margaret Delaney, Emily Coch, and Ellie DiBerardino (oh hey that?s me again). ?As we are located in cozy, friendly, fun Lauinger Library, we wanted to target our scholarship to the book-ish types, and thus the Midnight Writer Scholarship was born and became the most successful scholarship campaign in Corp history in its first year. ?Click here for info on last year?s winners.

12. Wait should I do this? ?Really?

YES. ?Do it.?Don?t be afraid. ?In the words of Kurt Vonnegut, ?Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae.?

13.?What if I have a question about the Midnight Writer Scholarship that didn?t appear on this oh-so-helpful list?

Email marketing.midnight@thecorp.org!? You?ll reach either Ellie DiBerardino (again, that?s me), Gillian Spear, or Katy Donahue. ?We?re fun. ?We?re friendly. ?We love emails. ?The response may come from midnightarts@gmail.com ? that?s still us, don?t worry.

There you have it friends. ?Show us what you?ve got!

?Ellie DiBerardino wants to be Kurt Vonnegut when she grows up.

How many in your Home Exchange Family? - Home Exchange ...

Post image for How many in your Home Exchange Family?

by John Mensinger on October 11, 2012

The house swap system meets the needs of small, medium, or large families. Some home exchange agencies allow you to search for partners based on the size of their home exchange group. I went to www.HomeforExchange.com, which has a search engine that makes this easy. 39% of their members are parties of two, presumably couples, though there are other possibilities. Folks traveling on their own make up 4% of the membership. The 43% in this group are usually free to travel anytime of the year, though if they are French may prefer July or August.
Families of four make up 28% of the membership, with families of three or five each accounting for 11%. Groups of six or more are 6%. The chart below shows these figures graphically. Most of these groups are families with kids, they need to swap during school holiday periods, though this isn?t necessary if the children are very young or adults.
Our experience is that singles and couples usually trade amongst themselves, probably because children are not involved. We have never traded with a couple or single though we have had friendly discussions. Our group is usually four to six; we have swapped with families of three, four, five, six, and seven (which is the maximum number our minivan accommodates.) We will consider an exchange with any family as long as their house and car meets our needs and our place can comfortably host them.

ICM must be on a roll at the moment with a large number of soft skin vehicles either newly released or in the works. This time around it is a product in the works in the form of the Krupp L3H163 Kfz.72, WWII German Radio Communication Truck. While so far we only have an artist?s impression of this new model it should prove popular if it lives up to the image. Armorama would like to thank Anna of ICM for providing this information.

Pakistani girl shot by Taliban defied threats for years

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan (Reuters) - A 14-year-old Pakistani schoolgirl campaigner shot by the Taliban had defied threats for years, believing the good work she was doing for her community was her best protection, her father said on Wednesday.

Malala Yousufzai was shot and seriously wounded on Tuesday as she was leaving her school in her hometown in the Swat valley, northwest of the capital, Islamabad.

The Taliban claimed responsibility, saying her promotion of education for girls was pro-Western and she had opposed them.

The shooting has outraged people in a country seemingly inured to extreme violence since a surge in Islamist militancy began after the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

"She is candle of peace that they have tried to blow out," said one Pakistani man, Abdul Majid Mehsud, 45, from the violence plagued South Waziristan region.

In the Swat valley, a one-time tourist spot infiltrated by militants from Afghan border bases more than five years ago, her family and community are praying for her survival.

Her father, Ziauddin Yousufzai, who ran a girls' school, said his daughter had wanted to go into politics.

He said that of all the things he loved about her, it was her fairness - her democratic ideals - that he loved the most.

Malala, then a dimpled 11-year-old with dark eyes, shot to fame when she wrote a blog under a pen name for the BBC about living under the rule of the Pakistani Taliban.

The militants, led by a firebrand young preacher, took over her valley through a mixture of violence, intimidation and the failure of the authorities to stand up to them.

Even after the military finally went into action with an offensive in 2009 that swept most of the militants from the valley, it remained a dangerous place.

Malala didn't keep quiet. She campaigned for education for girls and later received Pakistan's highest civilian prize.

Her prominence came at a cost.

"We were being threatened. A couple of times, letters were thrown in our house, that Malala should stop doing what she is doing or the outcome will be very bad," her father, sounding drained and despondent, said by telephone.

But despite the threats, he said he had turned down offers of protection from the security forces.

"We stayed away from that because she is a young female. The tradition here does not allow a female to have men close by," he said.

"NEVER FEARFUL"

Malala had spent many sleepless nights kept awake by gunfire, had been forced to flee her home with her two younger brothers and walked past the headless bodies of those who defied the Taliban.

Her parents also wanted her to have some chance of a normal childhood, her father said.

"We did not want her to be carrying her school books surrounded by bodyguards. She would not have been able to receive education freely," he said.

Her parents thought she would be safe among their neighbors in the town of Mingora, nestled among the snow-capped mountains that earned Swat the nickname of the Switzerland of Pakistan.

"I never imagined that this could happen because Malala is a young innocent girl," her father said. "Whenever there were threats, relatives and friends would tell Malala to take care but Malala was never fearful."

"She would frequently say 'I am satisfied. I am doing good work for my people so nobody can do anything to me'."

Recently, Malala had started to organize a fund to make sure poor girls could go to school, said Ahmed Shah, a family friend and chairman of the Swat Private Schools Association.

"She had planned on making the Malala Education Foundation in Swat," Shah said, adding that the Taliban used to print threats against her in the newspaper.

Classmate Brekhna Rahim said Malala "wished to have enough money and build schools in every village for girls in Swat".

The entire Swat Valley was in shock over the shooting, she said, glued to their televisions and crying as they watched the endlessly repeated scenes of her being stretchered to hospital.

"Women and girls are sad as if they had lost a very close member of the family," Rahim said.

"She was the life of the class," said fellow student, Dure Nayab.

GUNMEN

On Tuesday, a gunman arrived at her school, asking for her by name. He opened fire on her and two classmates on a bus.

Now her father is waiting for her to regain consciousness as she lies swathed in white bandages in a military hospital.

"Doctors are hopeful," he said. "I appeal to the country to pray for her survival."

Ziauddin Yousufzai said the shooting would stop neither him nor his daughter from their work.

He echoed the view of many people who said that the shooting was against Islamic law and against the culture of the ethnic Pashtun region, which forbids the targeting of women.

"We will focus even more on our work with more strength," he said. "If all of us die fighting, we will still not leave this work."

Her classmate Rahim put it another way.

"If the Taliban kill one Malala, they are thousands and thousands more brave girls like Malala in Swat."

Managing Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - Schwartz' Four Step ...

managingobsessivecompulsivedisorder e1349958459621 Self Help: Managing Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ? Schwartz? Four Step Method

Managing Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

All of us occasionally get obsessive thoughts and sometimes engage in compulsive behaviours. However, when things reach unmanageable proportions, and our lives are negatively controlled by obsessive thoughts and increasingly strange compulsive behaviours, then we know we have a problem. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can manifest itself in many ways: obsessive cleaning, constant checking, arranging things with relentless precision, repeating certain words, engaging in rituals, having thoughts of harming yourself or others and so on. A person with OCD experiences irrational thoughts which create high levels of anxiety. They then engage in compulsive behaviours to gain temporary relief from these anxious feelings. As an example, someone obsessively cleans (compulsive behaviour) to relieve the anxiety caused by tormenting thoughts that life-threatening germs are everywhere and are dangerous to themselves and others (irrational thoughts.)

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can help with OCD

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is a condition which can drive sufferers into a spiral of increasingly bizarre behaviour and cause their loved ones to despair. The encouraging news is that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is extremely effective when dealing with this difficult and debilitating health issue. As with all anxiety disorders the faster you seek professional help the better. It?s known that as time passes, irrational thoughts become more entrenched as the brain becomes increasingly locked into an anxious cycle. Research demonstrates that CBT, when used appropriately, helps to manage and change the false messages which OCD sufferers experience on a daily, hourly and often minute by minute basis. A trained CBT counsellor can help you to do battle with these irrational, involuntary and intrusive thoughts and reduce your compulsive behaviour.

Self-Help: Jeffrey Schwartz? ?Four Step Method.

Alongside professional help, it is essential that a sufferer works on making changes themselves. A very useful self-help method for managing and controlling OCD, which is pioneered by many organisations who work in this area, is Professor Jeffrey Schwartz? Four Step Method.

The Four Steps are:? Relabel, Reattribute, Refocus and Revalue. Let?s look briefly at each step:

Relabel: the key to this step is learning to recognise that your obsessive thoughts and compulsions are evidence of your OCD. Pay conscious attention, in the moment (mindfulness), to your thoughts. Keep reminding yourself that these thoughts are unwanted, that they do not represent reality and that they are part of an obsessive disorder. Unfortunately, just wishing thoughts away or ignoring them doesn?t work. This is often what OCD sufferers do, as they desperately try not to respond to the bizarre messages they are receiving. It?s crucial to know that this is not an effective strategy. Although it seems counter-intuitive, the reverse approach is needed. You need to become aware of your thoughts and compulsions, look at them, see them for what they are ? incorrect intrusions and false messages from your brain ? and relabel them as this.

Reattribute: the key point of this step is to realise that the intrusive thoughts and compulsions are caused by a medical condition and your current brain chemistry. As Schwartz sums up: ?It?s not me ? it?s my OCD.? Keep reminding yourself that just because your brain gives you a message doesn?t mean that it is true. Steps one and two work together to help you to correctly recognise irrational thoughts and to understand where these thoughts are coming from.

Refocus: this is the action step. Begin to refocus and distract yourself from the irrational thoughts and compulsive behaviours you feel compelled to engage with. Schwartz calls this ?shifting gears.? Even if it is just for a few moments, distract yourself away from carrying out a compulsive behaviour, or from hearing that repetitive thought in your head. Put some music on, take a walk, phone a friend or do a crossword puzzle. Do anything to take your mind away from your thoughts and compulsions. This resistance to engage in a compulsive behaviour ? to assuage your anxious irrational thoughts ? creates key changes. You don?t have to do what your faulty brain chemistry is telling you to do. Keep reminding yourself that your brain is tricking you and become adept at distraction techniques.

Revalue: over time, and with work on the previous three steps, you can begin to revalue your thoughts and urges. You can watch how your mind works, question the thoughts that you have and remind yourself that it is the OCD which is causing the intrusive and unwanted thoughts. You will no longer feel as compelled to believe these tormenting thoughts or need to follow through with the compulsions to reduce your anxiety. As the days, weeks and months pass, the quantity of irrational thoughts you experience will reduce and your compulsions will have less of a hold over you.

Along with your counsellor, you can work on the Four Step Method, or a similar CBT method, and begin to manage this distressing condition. There is hope. With time and appropriate treatment you can get the upper hand over your OCD and get your life back under your own control.
